The door to her quarters chimed softly, yet the sound rang in her head like a thousand bells. She winced and groaned as she made her way across the room. Her surroundings were spinning all around her by the time she answered the chime. She leaned heavily against the doorframe and waved it open. She closed her eyes in an attempt to get rid of the nausea but it didn’t work as well as she hoped. As she felt herself succumb to the dizziness she felt a pair of strong arms take a hold of her. She sank into the embrace and let herself be guided back to her bed. The last thing she knew was a soft whispering as someone tucked her in.
She pried one eye open, groaning as the light was too bright. Someone noticed her discomfort and immediately dimmed the lighting overhead to a more acceptable level. As she took another look around she noticed she was no longer in her own quarters, but in the infirmary instead. For a moment she was surprised, remembering distinctly she had passed out in her own bed.
“Good morning, Kate.” She cringed at the volume of Carson’s voice. “How are you feeling?” He took his voice down a notch, feeling her forehead. “Mmm, you still feel warm to the touch.” Kate frowned confused as she followed his hand away. The next thing she knew he stuck a thermometer in her mouth. “Wait for it!” Half a minute later it beeped. “102,2°.” Carson patted her shoulder. “That’s already a lot better than two days ago when you were closer to 105°.”
“105°.” Her voice was nothing but a mere whisper; her throat as dry as a crust.
“You had us pretty worried for a couple of days, especially Teyla. She hasn’t left your bedside the entire time you were here. I had to order her to get some sleep. Made Ronon accompany her to make sure she’d actually follow my orders.” Kate shifted her gaze from Carson to the now empty chair, butterflies nestling in her stomach at the thought of the Athosian sitting by her side, holding vigil. “You should have come in sooner.” Carson continued. “You developed a nasty infection on your airways. Teyla called us to your quarters. She was scared and panicking, while you were barely breathing.”
“Sorry...” Kate croaked, looking genuinely sorry.
“Get some more rest and let the antibiotics do their job.” Beckett smiled. “You’re not leaving this place for at least another week.” Kate sank a little lower into the bed, cringing under Carson’s gaze.
The next time she woke up she could hear soft voices float towards her. The lights were at a minimum level still and someone had left some water nearby. She yawned, drawing attention to her from the people in the room.
“Evening, Kate.” She turned to the sound and found Teyla smiling down at her. Butterflies immediately came to life and she blushed a little, hoping the other woman would mistake it for fever. “How are you feeling?”
Kate opened her mouth to say something, felt her throat protest fiercely and closed it again, settling with a nod instead.
“Carson said you have to stay here for at least another week.” Teyla poured a cup of water and handed it to Kate, who nodded a thank you; the cool water easing the throat considerably. “Is there anything I should get you from your quarters?”
She started to shake her head, changed her mind and nodded. “Book...” She whispered.
“Which one?” Teyla handed her a piece of paper, anticipating Kate’s lack of voice. Kate wrote the title down and the place where the other woman would be able to find it. “I will get it for you. Anything else?” Kate frowned, thinking and then settled with a little shake. “I will be right back.” Teyla squeezed her hand, leaving a burning sensation which could definitely not be contributed to any lingering fever.
